Derrick Greaves was born in Sheffield in 1927, and first trained as a sign writer. From 1948-52 he studied at the Royal College of Art and went on to teach part-time at St Martins School of Art in London and the Royal Academy Schools. During this time he won the John Moores Painting prize, and exhibited internationally.
