DJ Simpson

DJ Simpson (Born 1966) is active/lives in England.  DJ Simpson is known for Painting.

DJ Simpsons artwork displays an innovative, sculptural approach. Rather than applying paint on canvas, he uses an electric router to gouge marks into the birch plywood or Formika supports, creating imprints of swirling abstract lines and forms. He then coats the remainder of the plywood with a backdrop of enamel paints and laminates. Much of the excitement of DJ's work comes from the ways the router allows him to draw. The router generates line but is physically subtractive and acquires a spectral quality by containing the shadows cast by the depth of the support. Cutting the surface as a way of avoiding painting, but leaves drawing - or some version of drawing - intact. The intervention of the machine element shifts the control and application of pigment in unexpected ways, revisiting the Duchampian notion of the readymade.
