Clive Smith is a British painter based in New York. He graduated from Kingston University in 1988 and moved to New York the same year. He studied drawing at the Art Students League between 1995 and 1997. Smith received the first prize of the BP Portrait Award from the National Portrait Gallery in London in 1998 and 1999. His solo exhibitions were held at the Marlborough Gallery in New York and Madrid, Marc Straus Gallery, and the Galerie DeBellefeuille in Montreal. His works can be found in collections such as the National Gallery in London, the Cleveland Museum of Art, or the Frissiras Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. Smith's artwork style is hyper-realistic paintings. This piece belongs to the "Different but the Same" series that began in the early 2000s. The series invites the viewer to open dialogue without censorship, asking questions about the limits of intimacy, time, and the relativity of what we perceive with our gaze.
