Charles Turner

Charles Turner (1773/74 - 1857) was active/lived in England.  Charles Turner is known for Mezzotint portraits of notables, aquatints, etchings.

Appointed Mezzotinto Engraver in Ordinary to his Majesty in 1812, Charles Turner became an Associate of the Royal Academy of England in 1828, and there he exhibited both prints and paintings.

He was born in Woodstock, England to Charles Turner, Sr., an excise officer, and his mother, Jane, was a former paid companion to the Duchess of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace.

He moved to London in about 1789 and was apprenticed to the engraver John Jones. He  enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools and made made his first mezzotint in 1795.  In 1798, he was employed by the publisher Edward Orme to produce the first plates for his "transparencies," a new type of varnished and coloured print designed to be illuminated from behind. 

In 1801, he did with great success a print of Napolean, based on a portrait painted by Masquerier, but questioned is whether or not this first copy was done from Napolean in person.
