He followed the example of his father, Heinrich Mücke (1806-1891), who had also been a painter.  A student of William Sohn (1830-1899), who significantly influenced the development of genre painting in Düsseldorf, Mücke accordingly focused on this genre and in particular on interiors, which he often animated with groups of playing cats.
