The oriental painter Alphons Mielich studied in Paris, London and Munich. He spent several years in England and the Orient. Especially his journeys to North Africa served as a source of inspiration for him. Emperor Franz Joseph I and the ministry of education purchased several of his paintings depicting motifs from Cairo. In 1901 Alfons Leopold Mielich was sent to West Arabia for artistic researches by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. (cf. Heinrich Fuchs, Die österreichischen Maler des 19.
