Victor Seach

Victor Seach (1918 - 1991) was active/lived in New York / Belgium.  Victor Seach is known for Figural, abstract, non-objective.

African American artist Victor Seach was born in New York City.  In the late 1930s, he studied at the evening National Academy of Design, New York City.

Seach struggled to exhibit his works in New York galleries in the early 1940s.  When WWII began, he enlisted in the Army and served in the European campaign.  He accomplished a few works during his enlistment, including a 1945 portrait of the famous European pianist Water Gieseking (in the collection of the New York Philharmonic).  Towards the end of his service in Europe, Seach was in Brussels, Belgium.

After the War he returned to NYC.  He moved to Greenwich Village and continued to paint.  His style transitioned from a Symbolic Modernism into non-objective Abstract Expressionism: the style of the time.  Seach continued to meet resistance in finding galleries to exhibit his work in the 1950s.
