Louis-David Saugy was born in the village of Gérignoz, near Chateau d Oex, Switzerland, in 1871. As child he started to draw under the guidance of his mother, who was a school mistress, and the learned to cut designs from his father, who was a farmer. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the company of his uncle Alois.

At 32 years of age, he became a postman in Rougement, and continued cutting designs. At 40 years old, he began to exhibit his works in Geneva, and enjoy the success they immediately brought him. His scherenschnitt tells of the life and the seasons in Pays-d’Enhaut, the area where he lived in the town of Rougemont.

At the age of 57 years, he retired as a postman for health reasons and filled his days with two different activities: having in his basement a clandestine still making gentian liqueur, and paper cutting. He died in early 1953. He is considered one of the two masters of this art, along with Johann-Jakob Hauswirth.
