John Krimmel

John Lewis (Ludwig) Krimmel (1787 - 1821) was active/lived in Pennsylvania.  John Krimmel is known for Street-rural genre, interiors and figure painting.

Known as the "American Hogarth" because of his genre scenes of everyday 19th century life, John Krimmel is regarded as the first American professional genre painter. He was one of the few painters who chronicled ordinary life in the early 19th century, and many of his views were of people in Philadelphia where he lived from 1809 to 1821. His subjects were both humorous and moralistic and often were serious commentary on everyday experiences.

He was born in Wurtenberg, Germany, and came to Philadelphia in 1810. With fine, careful brushstrokes, he created crowded, humorous scenes much sought after by private collectors and museums. They were widely reproduced into engravings and lithographs, which, added to his popularity and served as a model for the next generation of genre painters. His paintings detailing folk-ways are historically important. He died young from drowning.
