Joseph Stahley

Joseph M. Stahley (1894 - 1969) was active/lived in California.  Joseph Stahley is known for Western genre painting, illustration.

The following information was provided by Jeff Armstrong, who received a copy of the artist's autobiography when he purchased a painting from the son of the artist's friend. 

"Howdy, Folks;  I'm Joe Stahley. 

"Art has been my life-long occupation.  From childhood I I liked to sketch and paint outdoors.  My horse, Don, and a canoe were prized possessions.  When fifteen I rode Don from Rochester, N.Y. to Chicago where I began my formal art education at the Chicago Art Institute while a YMCA instructor.  Later I returned home and taught art at Rochester Institute of Technology.  For several years I was employed at Lord & Thomas Advertising Agency in New York City.

In New York I attended classes at the Art Student League and the Grand Central Art School, under Dean Cornwell, Pruett Carter and Harvey Dunn.  Mr. Dunn was a continuing source of inspiration and help, and it was gratifying to receive Grand Central's "best pa   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 3857 characters.]  Artist bio
