Pioneering in Nebraska, widely traveled, talented and professional, Ethel Evans was one of the state’s most cosmopolitan and earliest fine art painters. By the end of the late 19th century, she, from a small town in Iowa, had studied in Paris with one of the better-known teachers, and had been a student at the Art Students League in New York and at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, later named Moore College of Art. Early exhibitions venues were the Art Institute of Chicago, the Paris Salon of 1897, and Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in Omaha in 1898.

Ethel was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa as next to the youngest of nine children of Mary Ann and William Davis Evans.
