Calthea Vivian

Calthea Campbell Vivian (1857 - 1943) was active/lived in California, Missouri.  Calthea Vivian is known for Landscape-missions-streets.

Landscape painter, etcher. Born in Fayette, MO on March 1, 1857.

Vivian moved to California with her family in the early 1870s. Settling in Sacramento, she studied at the Crocker Art Gallery under Wm F. Jackson. She continued at UC Berkeley and at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Mathews, Joullin, and Tilden.

Continuing in Paris in 1897, she studied at Académie Colarossi and Grande Chaumière, and with Charles Lazar in England. Upon returning to California in 1900, she was an art instructor at San Jose State College until 1917 and then at the California College of Arts and Crafts until 1923. In Berkeley, Vivian was a resident of the Hotel Claremont until 1938 when she returned to southern California.

A spinster, she died in Norwalk, CA on Dec. 24, 1943. Her subjects included landscapes, missions, figures, and French country scenes.
