When Thomas James Soper died in 1893, newspapers throughout the British Isles carried his obituary praising Soper as one of the most prolific and popular of Victorian landscape painters of the nineteenth century. Soper was born in London in 1817 at Edmonton. Little is known about Soper’s adolescence and early training. He first appears in the 1841 London Census as Thomas Soper, age 25 years, living at Felix Terrace, Islington West, St. Mary, London, of independent means as a fine art painter.

In 1842, Soper moved to # 6 Tibberton Square, London, where he occupied a small house and adjoining studio. The London Census for 1842 records his marriage to an Elizabeth Patterson on March 19th at Saint Bride Church, Fleet Street, London. By 1851, Soper is listed as the Head Artist at # 1 Vapuit Terrace, Holland Road, Lambeth, Surrey, with his wife, Elizabeth, and a servant girl, Sarah Chappell, aged 20.
