When Martin Dreyer died in Houston in 2001 at the age of 92, Houston Chronicle writer Janette Rodrigues wrote that his "colorful life included white-water rafting with Lady Bird Johnson and shooting pool with Minnesota Fats."  

He also was an accomplished painter, a noted fiction writer, an award-winning newspaper man, a teacher of creative writing, a gallery owner, a collector of art and pre-Columbian artifacts, and a political activist.

His fiction was "starred" in collections of the Best Short Stories of the Year, and he was Esquire Magazine's "Discovery of the Month."  In three decades with the Houston Chronicle he was a reporter, feature writer and editorial staffer.  Among his accolades was the national Big Story Award for investigative journalism.
