Jan Berdyszak studied at the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts from 1952 to 1958, undertaking independent painting  at the same time. He concentrated on the problem of space. In the cycle entitled "Double Circles" (1962-1964 and 1967-1969) he transgressed the convention of the painter's rectangle. The paintings consisted of two circles positioned vertically one over the other, covered with astir, contrasting forms which created an internal space within the composition. Artist's next step was the introduction of real space to the compositions by cutting a hole in the canvas of the painting. Since 1967 the space interfering with paintings substance was freed by the division of the picture into separate parts exposed in different positions - symmetrically, antithetically, perpendicularly/vertically to the angle of the room etc.
