PHILIP MAY KURMAN (August 8, 1911 – April 21, 1953)
A.K.A. “Phil May Kurman,” “Phil May”

Jewish-American artist, painter and illustrator. Born in Lublin, a Polish city in the Russian empire, the son of Sonia (1893 – 1926) and Morris Kurman (1889 – 1958). His father was employed as a presser of dresses in the garment industry.

Morris Kurman arrived in the United States in 1911 and was followed within the year by his wife and infant son. By 1920 the family lived in Manhattan and in 1930 they resided in the Bronx, where nineteen-year-old Philip was working as a piano instructor and performer, probably at local clubs. It was in New York that Kurman met his first wife, Rose, and the two moved to California during the mid-1930s.
