The artist Soshana Afroyim was born in 1927 in Vienna, with the civil name Susanne Schüller.  After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, the Jewish Schüller family escaped via Switzerland to Paris and finally to London, where the family remained for a period of two years.  In 1941, they moved on to New York, where Soshana enrolled in the Washington Irving High School.  In a painting class she met her later husband Beys Afroyim.  Due to his membership in the Communist Party the couple left the US in 1948 and lived in Cuba for nine months, where Soshana held her first exhibition.  Soshana moved back to Vienna in 1951, together with her son.  Here, she studied at the University of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, amongst other classes in the one of Herbert Boeckl.  Dissatisfied with their prevailing academic concepts, she abandoned her studies and moved to Paris in 1952.
