LILLIE WOODBURY BENNETT (June 4, 1879 – December 14, 1954)
A.K.A. “Lillie W. Tourtellotte,” “Lillie W. T. Bennett,” “L. W. Bennett”

Painter in oil and watercolor, ceramicist, china decorator, designer. She was born Lillie Tourtellotte in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the daughter of Lillie C. Woodbury (1858 – 1926) and Mills L. Tourtellotte (1853 – 1921). Her father was a prominent attorney in La Crosse.

After graduating from local schools, Bennett traveled to New York City where she attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Following her graduation, she was hired as one of the first instructors at the newly formed “State School of Clay-Working and Ceramics” at Alfred University, located in Alfred, New York.
