Arthur George Murphy

Arthur George Murphy (1906 - 1991) was active/lived in California, Connecticut, Ohio.  Arthur Murphy is known for Industrial, bridgebuilding.

Born in Tiffin, OH on Jan. 4, 1906. After studying at the ASL in NYC, Murphy was a cartoonist for newspapers in New York and Chicago for many years. He moved to San Francisco in 1930 and, after studying at the CSFA, abandoned commercial work to devote his time to fine arts. From 1935-40 he worked on the Federal Art Project and completed 91 lithographs, many of the construction of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. From 1943 he served as war artist in the South Pacific. After the war he settled in Connecticut and taught art in New Haven. He died in Old Saybrook, CT in 1991. Exh: Public Works of Art Project, So. Calif., 1934 (mural); San Francisco Art Association, 1937; De Young Museum, 1939; SFMA, 1941 (solo). In: SFMA; Newark Museum; De Young Museum; Oakland Museum; NMAA; Philadelphia Museum; MM.
