Helen Whitney Kelley

Helen Whitney Kelley (1852 - 1910) was active/lived in California, Hawaii.  Helen Kelley is known for Landscape, figure and floral watercolor painting.

Helen Whitney Kelley was born on Oahu, HI on May 1, 1852.  Helen was the daughter of Henry Whitney, the founder of the Honolulu Advertiser.  In 1876 she married Luke C. Kelley, an Oakland bank official.

She ferried each day to San Francisco where she studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute and was active in the local art scene.  During the 1890s she made trips to Hawaii to visit relatives. 

While there, she painted several watercolors of the Islands, floral studies, and lei-bedecked natives.  She died in Honolulu on April 3, 1910.

Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1883-93; San Francisco Art Association, 1884-95; Calif. State Fair, 1886-95. 
Works Held:  Bishop Museum (Honolulu).
