John Barger credits his evolution as an artist to the French impressionist Claude Monet, American master George Inness, and Texas artist Porfirio Salinas.

A.C. Cook, noted historian of early Texas art and owner of "The Hock Shop Collection" says of John Barger, "I have known John Barger for many years; I consider him to be without a doubt the finest contemporary Texas landscape artist." Mr. Cook goes on to say, "John Barger compares favorably to the great masters from the 1920's and the 1930's, which was a gold era in Texas art."
