Trnka as a versatile artist – painter, sculptor, illustrator, costume designer, puppeteer, writer, screenwriter, director of animated films (from 1936 he created scenes and costumes for the National Theater, in 1945 co-founded the Bratri vtriku studio and two years later the Puppet Film Studio) – during his lifetime he managed to illustrate over a hundred mostly children's books with distinctive images that were deeply etched in the memory of several generations.
