Carl Moser (1873 - 1939) was active/lived in New Jersey / Austria, France.  Carl Moser is known for Paintings of marine scenes and buildings, portrait drawing, printing, woodcut.

Between 1901 and 1907 Carl Moser lived and worked in Paris and made several trips to Brittany. There he studies the sea, the fishermen, the market and the life of the local people. Through his acquaintance with the Viennese Max Kurzweil, he came into contact with the Japanese wood cutting and printing technique and the style of "Ukiyo-e". The aim is to capture the earthly, ephemeral world in a woodcut or painting.

In literature, "Ukiyo-e" is also seen as a forerunner of Impressionism. Carl Moser combines the Japanese style with his western knowledge and creates his own style that represents this synthesis. The present painting takes up his preferred subject at this time and shows a Breton woman with her child shopping at the fish market. The works of this time also testify to the fascination and enthusiasm for the fashion and clothing of the people portrayed.
