Archibald Russell Watson Allan was educated at the Collegiate School in Glasgow and the Greenock Academy.  He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under the portrait painter John Spiers and at the Academie Julian and Colorossi's in Paris.

After a successful commercial career in Scotland he was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1937.  He lived for many years in Stirling.  His work has been widely exhibited in public collections in Scotland and the North of England.
