Description:  Jo Mora used to visit the home of the late attorney Peter Ferrante, a leading figure in 1930s and '40s Monterey. Frequent guests included John Steinbeck and other writers and artists. Quail gathered in a tree in the backyard of the Ferrante home, and Mora, ``quite taken by the tree,'' did this painting as a gift to the family. Because it was a gift, the painting is unsigned, but includes a letter of provenance from Peter and Harriett Ferrante's two daughters, Anne Pickett and Alice Catania.
