At the time when Paul Valéry knew them - her, her sister Jeannie, and Julie Manet - he had mocked this penchant of their family in a little poem [...] Like her aunt Berthe Morisot, she liked to paint everyday gestures, without emphasis or pretension. So those around her had to be wary of an attitude, a dress color that might tempt her... on the stairs or the steps, or in the living room of the welcoming Mesnil where she spent long periods of time.
