Oskar Nerlinger, 1893 in Schwann - 1969 in Ost-Berlin) Oskar Nerlinger was one of the most important artists of the politically engaged art scene of the Weimar Republic. He studied first from 1908 to 1912 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Strasbourg and then with Emil Orlik in Berlin. In the early 1920s, he belonged to the circle around Herwarth Walden's Berlin gallery "Der Sturm" and in 1924 joined the group "Die Abstrakten", which became known as "Die Zeitgemäßen" from 1932 onwards and was looking for new means of expression and content. After an exhibition ban and an arrest by the Nazi regime, Nerlinger was not able to work as an artist again until 1945. Together with Karl Hofer, he edited the magazine "Bildende Kunst" from 1947 to 1949, whose editorial advisory board included Ernst Frisch and Max Pechstein. Here, discussions on fundamental artistic questions were held under the editor-in-chief and art historian Gerhard Pommeranz-Liedtke.
