Mats Gustafson's ability to capture the lines of clothes and the movement of models on the catwalk with simple brushstrokes, clear lines and a few colors in watercolor has made him famous not only in Sweden but also internationally. Born in 1951, Gustafson started drawing early. “For as long as I can remember, I have been amused by clothes and drawing and painting. I drew clothes, high heels and ladies with big hats as a child – and when I was growing up in the 50s, everyone thought my designs were so funny” (Interview in Elle, July 7, 2023). However, he decides to become a scenographer and trains at the Dramatic Institute. At the end of his education, he resumes drawing and in the late 70s Gustafson begins a collaboration with the magazine Femina. He gets to go to Paris and draw at the fashion shows and eventually that leads to commissions for international fashion magazines and fashion houses as well.
