Jose Van Gucht

Jose Van Gucht (1913 - 1980) was active/lived in Belgium, France.  Jose Van Gucht is known for Marine and cityscape painting, drawing, watercolor.

José Van Gucht was a Belgian figurative painter, draftsman and etcher. His father was a make-up artist and hairdresser. José Van Gucht studied from about 1929 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, and he continued his studies at the Higher Institute in Antwerp with Isidore Opsomer and Pierre Paul.

During World War II he was briefly a prisoner in Spandau. During his imprisonment he made drawings of his fellow prisoners. After World War II he began a wandering artist, traveling through Europe and living from the sale of artworks that he made on the spot. He settled in St. Idesbald , in an abandoned bunker, and later in Furnes in West Flanders.

In Furnes was the old tavern "Three Kings", the town's oldest house, and this became his home and studio. He also founded a large studio in a house along the canal to Dunkirk.  He became known in Furnes as the 'bohemian' philosopher.
