Alfons Schilling was born in 1934 in Basel. In 1956 he movedfrom Switzerland to Vienna to study at the University of Applied Arts. Although he was never an actionist in the strict sense, he was influenced by the activism and coined its part too. In the body-hugging coloring events of the early 1960s, he explored the performative potential of painterly gesture from excessive. But soon Alfons Schilling shifted the focus towards perception, the images shifted by means of motors in rotation, built vision and binocular vision machines.
