Mary Brewster Hazelton was a quiet trail blazer in the early years of the "Boston School" of Art. Born in Milton, Massachusetts as the daughter of a Civil War surgeon and mental health advocate, she spent most of her adult life in Wellesley MA. After graduating from Wellesley High School. she was an early student of the famous Museum School in Boston with such legendary teachers as Edmund Tarbell, Joseph De Camp and Frank Benson.

While the majority of women in the school were amateurs, Mary was a pro! Most women artists of the age, as outlined in the now classic Studio of Her Own book by Erica Hirshler, struggled with the decision to continue with their passion for art, or opt out for the socially expected marriage and children.
