Emile Branchard

Emile Pierre Branchard (1881 - 1938) was active/lived in New York.  Emile Branchard is known for Naive marine, landscape, portrait.

Born in New York City, he was a truck driver and boarding house operator. One of his roomers, an artist who couldn't afford the rent, launched Branchard on his painting career by leaving paints behind to pay the bill. After tuberculosis forced him from the job market, he devoted his time to painting simple and homespun looking landscape and genre works. Often his work relies for effect on the sharp contrast between muted backgrounds and much lighter frontal elements. His philosophy was: "Painting is like cooking. You must have the right ingredients and know how to mix them. Some mix and some don't."
