Born in Antwerp, where he originally trained as a goldsmith, Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder later specialized as a still-life painter, becoming a member of the local guild of St. Luke in 1647/8, where his father was a master. He was clearly influenced by Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) and his workshop, who were active in Antwerp from mid-1630s.
