William Edward (James) Cook was a painter, critic and teacher, who was born in Christchurch, NZ . 

After studying at Canterbury School of Art in 1920-24 he won the Sawtell Traveling Scholarship and studied and traveled in London and at Edinburgh, Paris and Rome, 1924-27. 

The artist passed away from pneumonia while traveling in Italy in 1960.
