Stephen De Hospodar

Stephen De Hospodar (1902 - 1959) was active/lived in New York, California / Austria.  Stephen De Hospodar is known for Animal, figure, genre, block prints.

Stephen De Hospodar was born in Nagy Mihaly, Hungary and came to the US around 1913. He lived in many places over the years. He was in New York before going to California. He served in the US Army and did many war posters (Uncle Sam wants you). His sister Teresa Pike was also an artist.

Stephen De Hospodar was a painter in Los Angeles, who had come to the United States as a youngster. He took his art studies at the National Academy of Design, the Budapest Academy, Columbia University and with Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Charles Hawthorne.

In 1926, upon his arrival in Los Angeles, he was a movie set designer and block printer, about which he wrote two books. He went back and forth to New York enough to be considered part of the art scene there.
