PARIS — A host of unconventional characters turning away from home across Europe rushed to early 20th-century Paris, where they became part of a stunning avant-garde artistic movement. Some rose to fame, like Picasso. Others remain to be discovered.
The first large-scale retrospective of the virtually unknown oeuvre of Serge Férat is now on view at the Galerie Berès. The artist was enigmatic in life as in art, donning new identities with the same ease with which he switched styles.

He was born Serguei Nikolaevich Zhastrebzov (later Jastrebzoff in French spelling) in the same year as Picasso, 1881. Or perhaps not. In the catalog, Anisabelle Berès, who put the exhibition together in her gallery on the Quai Voltaire, notes that while this date “is believed” to be the right one, Férat’s naturalization papers, record his birth year as 187   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 9693 characters.]  Artist bio
