Richard Morrell Staigg — active in the United States from the 1840s — was born on September 7, 1817 in Leeds, England and died on October 11, 1881 in Newport, RI. The Staigg family came to the United States in 1831 and settled in Newport, RI. Here, in Newport, Staigg received his first art training from Jane Stuart (c.1812-1888), daughter of Gilbert Stuart, and later he went on to study with Washington Allston (1779-1843).

Staigg specialized in portraits and miniatures; later in life he painted genre and landscapes. He first exhibited his work in Boston, MA in 1841 and spent most of his career there. He worked in Baltimore, MD in 1845 and, for much of the 1850s, he worked in New York City and occasionally in Newport. With the increasing popularity of the camera, demand for miniatures declined.
