Louis-François Cassas

Louis-François Cassas (1756 - 1827) was active/lived in France.  Louis Francois Cassas is known for Painting.

After spending nearly six years in Italy, Louis- François Cassas leaves his first patron, Count de Rohan- Chabot to follow the Duke of Choiseul Gouffier, new Ambassador of France to the Sublime Porte. The French diplomat and the team of artists and scientists who accompanied the ship to Toulon on the Handsome in 1784. After a stopover in Athens and Constantinople two months, Louis- François Cassas begins an expedition, a 'Grand Tour' that will take him to the ends of the Levant. The artist is going to draw the monuments and the most picturesque sites, according to a wish of the ambassador, who fully fund the trip. The artist began his journey through Aleppo, and stops in Antioch, which is shown to the edge of the Orontes with a picturesque first plane, probably the taste of his Western sponsors. Follow Cyprus, Alexandria, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and finally Lower Egypt. The artist travels concealing its Western identity.
