Frederick W (Fred) Southworth

Frederick W. (Fred) Southworth (1860 - 1946) was active/lived in Washington, Ontario / Canada.  Frederick Southworth is known for Impressionist and realist landscape, seacape, shoreline, mountain and boat painting.

A painter, doctor, and businessman, Frederick W. Southworth (aka: Fred Southworth) was born in Thedford, Ontario, Canada, to American parents, and died in Tacoma, Washington, where he had lived since 1887. His works were exhibited at what is now the Seattle Art Museum and one painting is in the collection of the Washington State History Museum, Tacoma. (1)

His mediums were oil paint and watercolors. His subjects were landscapes, seascapes, shorelines, mountains and boats. His styles were Impressionism* and Realism*.

He is generally considered to be a self-taught painter; however, “Who Was Who in American Art, 1564 – 1975” (see sources) says he also studied at the Ontario School of Art [now the Ontario College of Art and Design University*], Toronto. He did live in Toronto; as well as in London, Ontario; Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan; and St. Paul, Minnesota; before moving to Tacoma.
