Born in Debrecen, Hungary, she was one of two children born into a middle class Jewish family.  Interested in art early on in life, she sculpted little trinkets out of melted wax from the candles that her mother used to burn.

Devoted to her little brother, she had to hand him to her mother after they had been transported to Auschwitz in 1944, never to see them, or her father, again.

She was forced to work in an underground bomb factory but managed to keep her art alive by sculpting small animals out of clay.

She survived the war and returned to Hungary where she had to fend for herself, without family, and in 1956 she left Hungary for art school in Yugoslavia and from there she went on to France to study art on a scholarship. She married and divorced, moved back to Hungary with her two children and then to the U.S. Veres-Fe remarried and became an art teacher as well as a sculptor.
