James Ferdinand McCan (1869 - 1925) was active/lived in Texas. James McCan is known for Symbolist, portrait, cowboy scene painting.
McCan, James Ferdinand (1869-1925)
James McCan was a student at the National Art Training Schools of South Kensington, London. He emigrated to the United States in 1897 and lived six years in Omaha, Nebraska, where he worked in a bank before returning to Ireland to continue his art studies.
Upon his return to the US, he settled in San Antonio. His work attracted the attention of the King Ranch Family, and he spent two years painting on the ranch and in nearby Corpus Christi.
McCan went to Victoria in 1897 to execute a portrait commission for the McFaddin family and remained a resident of Victoria for the next twenty-seven years. He took an active part in the community affairs and served on the city council. He painted along the Coleto Creek and the Guadalupe and Medina rivers and south-central Texas and in and around Austin.
The last years of his life McCan moved to Boerne (for around 20 or so months) to regain his health; he died ...
