Painter Sylvia Plimack Mangold is essentially an abstractionist who continued to apply abstract dicta in her work as she moved toward photo-realism, and later in her career, plein-air realism when she moved to Washingtonville, New York, where she currently resides. Her work has been widely exhibited including New York galleries, Brooke Alexander and Fischbach, and Europe galleries, Cardin in Paris, Galerie Verna in Zurich, and Documenta 6 in Kassel, Germany.

Mangold was born in 1938 in the Bronx, New York, attending the High School of Music and Art, then Cooper Union in New York City from 1956 to 1959. She studied at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut from 1959 to 1961, gaining her B.F.A. Degree. She received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1974. Mangold taught drawing and painting from 1971 to 1981 in New York City at the School of Visual Arts.
