Osuitok Ipeelee (1923 - 2005) was active/lived in Nunavut / Canada.  Osuitok Ipeelee is known for Inuit sculpture.

Osuitok Ipeelee (b.1923 / d.2005)

Ipeelee was born in 1923 in the southern tip Baffin Island in Canada.

Growing up in a traditional Inuit environment near Cape Dorset, Ipeelee spent is childhood learning to hunt and fish from his father, Ohotok Ipeelee.  His father also taught Ipeelee how to care ivory and sculpt.

During the 1940's, Ipeelee's ivory miniatures depicted the historic Inuit period of art.  By 1951, he was regionally known and a respected carver on Baffin Island.

John Houston, on a expedition, met Ipeelee and encouraged him to carve in soapstone.

Inpeelee directed a team of craftsmen in the creation of the official mace for the Council of the Northwest Territories, in 1955.  Then in 1959 he created a sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II.  That same year upon her visit to Canada, the Queen was presented with the sculpture.
