Pupil of Wappers and N. De Keyser at the Academy of Antwerpen.  Traveled in Holland in 1876, in England and Germany in 1875, in France and Italy in 1878, in Palestina and Egypt in 1883.  Received several awards at the Exhibition of Praha in 1877, Brussels in 1878-79, Amsterdam in 1883, Melbourne in 1888, Chicago in 1893.  In 1893, he traveled in Palestina with P. Van Der Ouderaa and M. Rooses.  Painter of history, genre scenes and portraits.

Between 1876 and 1882 he only painted portraits.  Together with P. Van Der Ouderaa and A. De Vriendt he constituted the Antwerp group with traditionalist trend following the example of H. Leys.  As themes he generally selected scenes taken from historic events during the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands.  He rendered with accuracy and precision the costumes of that period.  Also made several paintings with religious themes.&nbs   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1855 characters.]  Artist bio
