Assouaou Mammeri

Assouaou Mammeri (1890 - 1954) was active/lived in Algeria.  Assouaou Mammeri is known for Land-and cityscape painting.

Assouaou Mammeri is the modern master in painting from Algiers.  Simplicity and truth are his formula.  His portraits are a calm reflection of a deep psychological study guided by a desire to paint.  

Mammeri taught in Great Kabylia in 1910, then in Gouraya in 1913. going on the then be professor or ornamental design in Rabat and Fez, then regional inspector of Indigenous Arts in Rabat.  In 1929 he was appointed Inspector of Moroccan Arts in Marrakech where he remained until his retirement in 1948.  

An artist at heart and in hand, he created the school of Andalusian music and songs for Berbers whose orchestras still perform regularly on Radio Morocco.  His passion for the Berber folklore led him to work as a technical advisor to the film documentary, Dancing Berbers.
